Coronation of Patriarch Kirill

Go over to the Moscow Patriarchate and have a look at the photos of the Coronation of Patriarch Kirill. Words fail me! Such magnificence and beauty in a liturgy! Truly they know how to give glory to God. Thanks to the New Liturgical Movement for the link.

I had the privilege going to Moscow on holidays a few years ago, and I believe this ceremony took place in what is called the Cathedral of the Saviour in Moscow. The "old" Cathedral was blown up by the Bolsheviks to build a swimming pool, and a "new" one was built in the latter period of the Gorbachev era, though I think it took about ten or fifteen years to build, and I understand that it was the Mayor of Moscow, not Gorbachev, who was the driving force behind the construction.

Let me just say this new Cathedral has to be seen to be believed.

What puzzled me most about Moscow was the fact that, despite so many years of "atheistic Communism", so many of the old churches remain. They were being used for different purposes, of course, but it is something which often crossed my mind: why didn't the Bolsheviks destroy everything? Maybe, deep down, deep down inside, they knew something. . .

I think they may have recognized the great beauty and usefulness of the buildings. Perhaps too, as you say, deep down they knew...
